چکیده

Aims. The supernova-GRB (γ-ray burst) association is tested by showing the consistence of the distributions of pulsar’s kick velocities and GRB energies, under the assumption that cosmic GRBs are related to supernova explosions that form pulsars. Methods. These two distributions are derived from observations, and are checked by K-S test. Results. The deduced distribution of kick velocity from the total energy of GRBs and the observed distribution of radio pulsars are found to come from a same parent population. Conclusions. This result may indicate that GRBs could be really related to supernovae, and that the asymmetry of GRB fireballs would cause the kick of pulsars.

Gamma-Ray Bursts from Neutron Star Kicks

The idea that gamma-ray bursts might be a kind of phenomena associated with neutron star kicks was first proposed by Dar & Plaga (1999). Here we study this mechanism in more detail and point out that the neutron star should be a high speed one (with proper motion larger than ∼ 1000 km/s). It is shown that the model agrees well with observations in many aspects, such as the energetics, the event...

The distance scale of cosmological γ-ray bursts

The isotropic but radially non-uniform distribution of γ-ray bursts (GRBs) observed with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) suggests that the bursts may be at cosmological distances. At such distances, the expansion of the Universe should have two main effects on the statistics of γ-ray bursts: first, it should stretch the tempora...

Gamma Ray Bursts from Stellar Collisions

We propose that the cosmological gamma ray bursts arise from the collapse of neutron stars to black holes triggered by collisions or mergers with main sequence stars. This scenario represents a cosmological history qualitatively different from most previous theories because it contains a significant contribution from an old stellar population, namely the globular clusters. Furthermore, the gas ...

Pre-Existing Superbubbles as the Sites of Gamma-Ray Bursts

According to recent models, γ-ray bursts apparently explode in a wide variety of ambient densities ranging from ∼ 10 to 30 cm. The lowest density environments seem, at first sight, to be incompatible with bursts in or near molecular clouds or with dense stellar winds and hence with the association of γ-ray bursts with massive stars. We argue that low ambient density regions naturally exist in a...

X–Ray Observations of γ–Ray Burst Afterglows

The discovery by the BeppoSAX satellite of X-ray afterglow emission from the γ-ray burst which occurred on 28 February 1997 produced a revolution in our knowledge of the γ-ray burst phenomenon. Along with the discovery of X-ray afterglows, the optical afterglows of γ-ray bursts were discovered and the distance issue was settled, at least for long γ-ray bursts. The 30 year mystery of the γ-ray b...
